Nigeria’s top police official says the nation’s security forces are actively monitoring rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East for possible implications at home, as international conflict dynamics spark precautionary measures across African capitals.
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu stated on Wednesday that the Nigeria Police Force is closely tracking developments in the Middle East amid growing global instability, underlining the need to anticipate potential knock-on effects in Africa’s most populous country.
Disu spoke to State House correspondents shortly after his swearing-in as the 23rd indigenous IGP, a ceremony administered by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He emphasised that proactive surveillance, intelligence gathering and nationwide patrols have been intensified to maintain law and order.
“Everywhere in the world, we practice intelligence-led policing,”

Disu said, noting that Nigeria has diverse communities with ideological and faith based links to global movements, making vigilance essential whenever international crises escalate.
“We are taking all necessary action … to prevent possible unrest locally.”
The IGP highlighted that security agencies are engaging with community and religious leaders to ensure that any reaction to foreign events does not lead to violence within Nigeria. Officials have also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could stoke panic or undermine safety.
Disu reaffirmed the force’s commitment to strengthening intelligence operations, community engagement, and strategic partnerships to protect peace and stability nationwide. He also reiterated support for ongoing discussions on police reforms, including the possible establishment of state police units to enhance grassroots security.
