At a high-profile gathering in West Africa, John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, delivered a candid and strategic message about the future of the region, one that hinges significantly on the stability of Nigeria.
Speaking at the African Heritage Awards held in Accra, Mahama underscored the deep interdependence between African nations, particularly Ghana and Nigeria.
He described Nigerians as “cousins,” highlighting the cultural and historical ties that bind the two countries, while issuing a stark warning about the consequences of instability in Africa’s most populous nation.
“If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” Mahama stated. “When you have cousins, 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million do not come drifting towards a small country like Ghana.”
His remarks reflect growing concerns among regional leaders about the ripple effects of economic or political instability in Nigeria.
As Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, Nigeria plays a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of West Africa.
Any downturn, Mahama suggested, could trigger migration pressures and strain neighboring economies.
In a striking personal note, Mahama revealed that Nigeria’s success is part of his daily prayers.

“Every day I wake up, I pray for Nigeria—God, let Nigeria get its act together,” he said.
Beyond the immediate concern of migration, Mahama framed the issue within a broader call for reform across the continent.
He emphasized that Africa’s long-term progress depends on effective leadership, sound economic management, and a more strategic approach to resource utilization.
According to him, the continent’s challenges, and opportunities, are shared. “Regional stability depends on collective progress,” he noted, urging African leaders to adopt policies that foster sustainable growth and improve living standards.
Mahama’s comments arrive at a time when discussions around intra-African cooperation, economic resilience, and governance are intensifying.
His message was clear: Nigeria’s stability is not just a national priority, it is a regional imperative.
As West Africa navigates an increasingly complex economic and political landscape, Mahama’s warning serves as both a caution and a call to action for leaders across the continent.
