At least eight people have been killed after suspected terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) on a vital bridge in Niger State, Nigeria highlighting growing concerns over attacks on civilian infrastructure in West Africa.
The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, destroyed a key bridge linking rural communities and disrupted movement to a major regional market. According to reports, a vehicle traveling along the route triggered the explosive, killing all occupants instantly.
Security officials confirmed that the bridge had been deliberately targeted, suggesting a calculated attempt to isolate communities and cripple local economic activity.
The attack is part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in Nigeria’s northern regions, where armed groups increasingly deploy roadside bombs and target public infrastructure.
Authorities have launched clearance and security operations in the area, but the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups and the vulnerability of transport networks critical to civilian life.
