In a move aimed at revitalizing democratic competition ahead of next year’s pivotal general elections, leading Nigerian politician Nyesom Wike has pledged to rebuild the country’s main opposition party and restore it as a voice for the people.
Speaking on Sunday at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention in the capital city of Abuja, Mr. Wike underscored plans to restructure the party to better reflect the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
He framed the initiative as part of a broader renewal effort emphasizing unity, inclusive leadership and democratic values.
“We will rebuild our party in such a way that it meets the yearnings and aspirations of the generality of Nigerians,” Wike said, calling on current and former members — including those who left over internal disputes — to return and contribute to national progress.

Wike characterized the PDP as a “people’s party” whose strength lies in harnessing diversity and collective purpose. He stressed that all factions and voices within the party would be welcomed, reinforcing a vision of broader participation and cohesion ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
His remarks come as the party seeks to navigate internal tensions and regain relevance after several high-profile defections, emphasizing reconciliation and outreach as key pillars for future success.
Political analysts see this commitment as part of a wider trend in Nigerian politics, where major parties are repositioning themselves for the next general elections — with democracy, accountability and citizen engagement at the center of public debate.
