BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian President Honors Soldiers Killed in Borno Attack

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the deaths of military personnel killed in a coordinated insurgent assault on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State on April 9, 2026, describing the fallen as “unforgettable heroes” who paid the ultimate price defending their nation.

In an official statement, President Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the loss of soldiers from the 29 Task Force Brigade of Operation HADIN KAI, which was targeted in the early-morning attack. The Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops engaged the assailants but suffered casualties during the counter-offensive.

Tinubu paid tribute to the courage and dedication of Nigerian troops, emphasizing that their actions helped prevent militants from overrunning nearby communities under military protection. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen, including the unit’s commander, Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah.

Calling for national solidarity, the president urged both the armed forces and the Nigerian public to remain resolute in the ongoing fight against terrorism. He also appealed to the media and citizens to refrain from narratives that could demoralize troops and instead support efforts to achieve peace and security across the country.

The attack underscores persistent security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where militant groups continue to mount operations against military and civilian targets despite sustained counter-insurgency campaigns.

BREAKING: Nigeria Approves $6B Foreign Loans to Bolster Budget, Upgrade Ports

The Nigerian Senate has swiftly approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request for $6 billion in external financing, a move aimed at shoring up the federal budget and fast-tracking critical infrastructure projects amid growing economic pressures. The financing package includes a $5 billion structured total return swap with First Abu Dhabi Bank and a $1 billion loan arranged through Citibank London with support from UK Export Finance (UKEF). Government officials say the bulk of the funds will address shortfalls in the federal budget and improve liquidity management, while the additional loan will finance the rehabilitation and modernization of Nigeria’s major ports, including the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port—key gateways for the country’s international trade. Senate approval came rapidly after plenary sessions reviewing the president’s letters requesting legislative consent under Nigeria’s Debt Management Office Act. Analysts say the swift legislative action reflects the government’s urgency in addressing fiscal pressures while signaling Nigeria’s intent to maintain robust engagement with international financial partners. The loans are expected to bolster economic activity, increase trade efficiency, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the West African region, while also helping the government meet pressing budget obligations and infrastructure development goals.
