Pope Leo XIV will undertake his first pastoral visit to Africa from April 13 to April 23, 2026, marking a significant milestone for his pontificate and the global Catholic Church.
The 10-day journey will take him across four nations, Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, covering 11 cities in what is expected to be one of the most extensive papal visits to the continent in recent years.
This visit comes at a time when Africa is playing an increasingly central role in global Catholicism, with a rapidly growing population of believers and vibrant local churches.
The trip reflects Pope Leo XIV’s broader priorities of strengthening faith communities, promoting peace, and encouraging cooperation across religious and cultural lines.
The journey will begin in Algeria, where the Pope is expected to place strong emphasis on interfaith dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
In a country where Islam is the dominant religion, his meetings with Islamic leaders and participation in symbolic events are expected to highlight the importance of coexistence, mutual respect, and shared spiritual values.
The visit is also historically significant, as it represents a rare papal presence in the North African nation.
From Algeria, the Pope will travel to Cameroon, where he will visit major cities including Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Douala.
His time there is expected to focus on peacebuilding and social stability, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in parts of the country.
He will meet with government officials, religious leaders, and young people, while also engaging with communities affected by conflict and humanitarian challenges.
His message in Cameroon is anticipated to center on reconciliation, unity, and hope. In Angola, the Pope’s visit will highlight the country’s deep Catholic roots and spiritual heritage.
