The political atmosphere in Delta State has been set ablaze following the dramatic declaration by former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, to contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat in 2027 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
What he framed as a “divine call to service” is already being interpreted by critics as a calculated power grab, and a referendum on the controversial policies of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his declaration, Omo-Agege positioned his return as both spiritual and strategic, claiming he sought “the face of our Lord Jesus Christ” before accepting what he described as overwhelming pressure from constituents, but opposition figures have dismissed this as political theater, arguing that the Senate is being treated as a platform for political resurrection rather than public service in Delta Central Senatorial District.
Perhaps the most contentious aspect of Omo-Agege’s declaration is his unapologetic alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the so-called “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which he praised as necessary and beneficial reforms.
However, many Nigerians, particularly in the Niger Delta, view these same policies—fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification—as economically harsh, with critics in Warri describing his claims as disconnected from the lived realities of citizens grappling with inflation, unemployment, and rising costs of living.

His campaign leans heavily on his record between 2015 and 2023, which he described as Delta Central’s “golden years,” citing achievements such as a federal polytechnic, ICT hubs, and healthcare improvements, yet critics counter that several of these projects remain incomplete, underutilized, or overstated, with analysts in Sapele arguing that attracting projects is not the same as delivering measurable impact.
Omo-Agege’s repeated invocation of the “Urhobo Nation” has also stirred controversy, with some interpreting it as cultural affirmation while others warn it risks deepening ethnic divisions in a politically sensitive region.
Within the APC, his declaration has reportedly exposed internal tensions, as younger aspirants and former allies quietly express unease, suggesting that beneath public calls for unity, fractures are emerging that could lead to a contentious primary battle in Delta Central.
Among voters, reactions remain sharply divided, with some viewing him as an experienced operator who understands federal power dynamics, while others, particularly younger constituents in Ughelli, express fatigue with what they see as recycled leadership and a lack of accountability.
Ultimately, Omo-Agege’s return bid has evolved into more than a routine political declaration; it is shaping up as a defining contest over loyalty to federal authority versus responsiveness to local realities, over legacy claims versus tangible outcomes, and over whether Delta Central’s political future lies in continuity or generational change, ensuring that as the 2027 elections approach, the race will be anything but quiet.
