A wave of outrage has spread across Nigeria after the Federal Government announced plans to reintegrate 744 former terrorists and victims of violent extremism into society under its de-radicalisation programme known as Operation Safe Corridor.
The decision has triggered fierce public backlash, with many Nigerians questioning why former insurgents are being rehabilitated while thousands of victims of terror attacks remain displaced, traumatised, or without compensation.
Critics argue that bringing ex-fighters back into communities without visible justice for victims could deepen distrust in government and create new security fears.
Some civil society voices described the policy as “rewarding violence,” warning it may send the wrong signal to others considering joining extremist groups.

Youth groups in northern Nigeria also reportedly condemned the move, saying reintegration without accountability risks worsening insecurity in already fragile regions.
Government officials, however, insist the programme is designed to reduce extremism, encourage defections, and promote long-term peace.
Authorities say the initiative is not a reward for terrorism, but part of a wider national security strategy.
The controversy highlights Nigeria’s difficult balancing act between justice for victims and efforts to end one of Africa’s longest-running insurgencies.
