Nigeria’s opposition politics suffered another dramatic blow on Monday after a court in Kebbi State ordered the detention of a factional chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), escalating a fierce internal battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
The detained chairman, Sufyanu Bala, reportedly backed by former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, was remanded over alleged contempt of court after rival party members accused him of defying an earlier judicial order.
The case highlights growing instability inside the ADC, a party many had hoped could emerge as a serious challenger in Nigeria’s next national elections.

Instead, parallel factions, legal disputes, and leadership wars are threatening to tear the party apart before campaign season fully begins.
Bala’s camp has accused state authorities of trying to sabotage the party’s chances and block them from appearing on future ballots, while opponents insist the court action is about enforcing discipline and legitimacy.
Political observers say the latest courtroom clash exposes a wider crisis in Nigeria’s opposition ranks, where infighting may hand an advantage to the ruling APC if rivals fail to unite.
