Niger Delta Women Rally for Diezani as UK Court Battle Sparks Fresh Nigeria Corruption Debate

A coalition of Ijaw women in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta has publicly defended former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, urging British authorities to ensure fairness and due process in her ongoing legal case in the United Kingdom.

The women said Diezani should not be condemned before the court reaches a verdict, describing the case as one that has drawn global attention to Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight and treatment of former officials.

Diezani, once one of Africa’s most powerful female oil figures, has faced years of allegations linked to corruption and misuse of office, all of which she has previously denied.

The renewed public support from the Niger Delta highlights how the case remains politically sensitive in Nigeria, where many see it as a test of justice, accountability and international cooperation.

Observers say the UK court proceedings could have wider implications for anti-corruption efforts across Africa, especially in cases involving former top government officials.

From Brothers to Burdens: Why Nigerians Are No Longer Welcome in South Africa, Ghana - The Sad Story

Across parts of Africa, a troubling pattern has emerged: periodic waves of hostility directed at Nigerians living and working in other African countries. In South Africa, it has manifested in violent xenophobic attacks; in Ghana, tensions have surfaced through business closures and regulatory crackdowns. The rhetoric is familiar—“they should go back home.” But beneath that language lies a far more complex and uncomfortable reality than simple dislike of a nationality. This moment is not just about Nigerians; it is about economics, identity, governance failure, and the unfinished project of African unity.
