Nigeria’s Ruling Party Delays Presidential Primary as 2027 Election Race Intensifies

Nigeria’s governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed its presidential primary election to May 23, 2026, in a move that could reshape the early battle for power ahead of the country’s 2027 general elections.

The party also announced a dual-mode candidate selection system, allowing aspirants to emerge through either direct primaries or consensus, depending on internal agreements.

However, if any contender rejects consensus, the process will automatically switch to direct voting by party members.

According to APC officials, the sale of nomination forms will begin on April 25 and close on May 2, while completed forms must be submitted by May 4. Screening of presidential aspirants is scheduled for May 9, with final results to be published on May 11.

The decision comes as Africa’s most populous nation prepares for another high-stakes election cycle, with political observers closely watching whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will seek re-election under the APC banner.
